Thus the name Restaino signifies "one from Ristagno". The author states that the surname Restaino is found chiefly in the areas of Bella, Oppido Lucano, Potenza, Rionero in Vulture, and widely in Naples. Variants of the surname Restaino include Restagno and Reitano.
One of the ancestral references to this surname or to a variant is a record of one Filomena Michela Restaino, daughter of Pietro Restaino and Maria Michela Mancino, whose christening was registered in San Severo, Foggia, Italy, on February 21, 1834. Her brother Giovan Battista Restaino also was christened there on November 13, 1835. Margherita Restaino, daughter of Francesco Restaino and Felicia Iannuzzi, was christened in Roselo Valfortore, Foggia, on April 16, 1854. However research is ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier that the dates indicated above. The surname Restaino was introduced to the United States as early as 1883, in which year there is a record of the emigration of one L. Restaino who departed Naples aboard the Alsatia and arrived in New York on October 16, 1883.
